Don't stop at primer...it passes water and oxygen.  Put some finish coat on it, even if you will sand off later.  Even cheapie spray paint.  Then sand off
and reprime when finishing your bodywork.

Disclaimer: I am lousy at and hate bodywork, and am not an expert in it.  But I understand fundamental chemistry...
