[Vwdiesel] Think I can tow my boat with my golf?

I've pulled a couple thousand pounds of lumber on a small trailer with my '95 Jetta TD.  The diesel has lots of torque, but the front wheels can spin if the tongue weight is maxed.

I've got an '02 Golf TDI w/5speed.

I've also got a 19 foot ski boat.  According to the internet, it would weigh approximately 2500 lbs, including the trailer, with fuel onboard.

I don't got my old Explorer anymore.  :(

The lake is only about 10 miles away, and I used to pull my old, slightly smaller boat with my Corrado occasionally with no problem.  I even once pulled it with my old 1.6 NA-powered Cabriolet.

I figure it would be cheaper in the long run (initial purchase as well as ongoing taxes and insurance) to buy a small welder and some metal to build a hitch for the Golf rather than buying another old cheap SUV.

Thoughts?
