A final cautionary though as this interesting thread passes into
history....Just be sure you can STOP.

Don't do it if there is ANY question in your mind about that, even a slight
question.
Once you set that trailer+tow vehicle system in motion, never drive it so
there is a risk of being unable to stop, because all sorts of situations
can develop in an instant.....and probably will if you do it enough times.

I towed a small Swedish SMV trailer over the Alps 3 times with a VW 412,
and all sorts of things happened that I didn't expect. Mountain goats
rolled a rock down in front of us, ice developed in the summer at 5,000
feet, and children sprang from the bushes as we approached, swarms of crazy
little Italian sports honking their shrill horns cars careened around us
without any warning, a tour bus appeared in front of us as we rounded a
curve, a Mercedes limo demanded the right of way on an autobahn at (his)
110 mph speed.....etc.

Be CERTAIN you can stop that thing behind you (that weighs as much as your
car) and be sure the car gets stopped also. and don't ever risk carrying a
passenger that you care about very much (including yourself) if there is
any risk at all.

Yesterday was Friday the 13th. Should have written sooner....
