One suggestion to get an idea as to the value of your '01 TDI Golf is to monitor your local Craig's List & nearby metropolitan areas. I live in rural Nevada City, CA. It is about 50 miles NE of Sacramento. Tad, I don't recall where you live. It would be helpful if you & others would add your general location following your name, as I do. I monitor on a daily basis, the Sacramento & the San Francisco Bay areas of Craig's List under "cars & trucks" with the limitation of "diesel & biodiesel" to get a feel for what diesels are going for in my area. I find that Mercedes diesels are selling for less than half the prices shown in Old Cars Price guide. There are probably 4 or 5 Mercedes diesels from 1979 thru 1987 for every pre TDI VW diesel advertised. For what it is worth, the 2012 Old Cars Price Guide (OCPG) shows a 2001 GLS TDI 4 door hatchback in number 3 condition to be worth $4,500. For other VW's it suggests adding 10% to the a VW gasser price for a TDI. In my area, TDI's seem to be going for over double the values given in the OCPG. FYI, a number 3 condition car looks like a new car from 20 feet away but upon close inspection, you can small dings & dents typical of a well maintained car of its age. A number 2 car upon close inspection looks like a new car. In summery, it looks like that in northern Calif. Mercedes diesels are going for half or less of the OCPG valuation whereas TDI's are going for double the OCPG price. Another way is to monitor what TDI's are selling for on eBay. I hope this helps some of you.
