Hi Loren and any others that might be interested.

My 1990 1.6 turbo VW Fox wagon conversion is now running
great in fact totally awesome. When I did the rebuild on the engine I had
the piston tops turned down about 20 thousands. It took out about half the
pockets in the pistons. When I got it running It seemed decently strong but
not much mileage. I had set it up as per Bentley. It was somewhat hard
starting because of the lower compression. I tried every trick I knew about
injector pump adjustments from a previous 1.6 turbo but I couldn't get the
mileage up. It then made me think since I lowered the compression I had
probably changed the ignition point so pump settings perhaps would be cut
and try. The more advance I gave the pump the better it started and ran.
>From the normal around 1 I went to 1.17 and it improved. I kept going in
small jumps and now am at about 1.45. I'm sure I have a lot more horsepower
and torque than I did with a stock 1.6 diesel turbo engine that was in a
Rabbit pickup. This engine is running cool on the EGT's and just awesome
power for a little diesel. I'm going to have to find a Dyno here in Western
Washington or Northern Oregon to test this out. Now that I have enough miles
on it to believe the rings set I just checked the compression and it is just
a little above 300 lbs. I have a Cone filter and a 2.5 inch exhaust system.
Running a rebuilt injection pump and rebuilt turbo spec injectors.
