[Vwdiesel] Priming a pump

I see what you are saying, that is just how I do it most of the time.
Sometimes I do not bother going back to crack the hard lines at the top of each injector at all.
Here is how I learned that lesson when I first got my 1.9na running about 15 years ago......
I did not know much about diesel injection or setting the timing, I had no idea.
I installed the engine in the van and had AAA tow it to a garage that had an old German mechanic, Gunther.
One of his other helpers who knew VW diesels put on the timing belt and set the pump timing. We get the engine running and it sounds good. I do not remember him cracking the hard line before or after we got it running. I pay him for the time and down the road I go 4 miles back to my house. Less then 2 miles down the road I hear this rapping sound as if my new engine is toast, my heart is in my stomach. I pull over and shut it down. Call AAA again and flat bed the van back to the shop. Old man Gunther comes out to see what the issue is. The noise is gone, the motor sounds fine again, ??? I tell him what it sounded like. Then as we are looking at the motor and watching it run, the rapping sound comes back. He pulls an open end 17mm out of his back pocket and cracks the injector lines one by one. You have a STUCK injector, air locked because of air in the lines he says.
Don't worry about that noise that sounds like your engine is history, it is most often a stuck injector.
When it happens, crack the lines one by one to let fuel out, shut it down, restart and all will be fine. That is how I learned about air in the hard lines.
So, I always get it running first and then crack the lines one by one, but you could try and do it before it starts I guess. But whenever I use my mighty vac to suck fuel into and through the pump it useually starts in the first 10 to 15 seconds of cranking.

I was thinking the same thing. You would normally crack the injector lines
when you are turning it over to purge the lines of air so it would start.

At risk of sounding like a smartypants... is the injector-cracking
necessary? If the cylinder is firing, doesn't that mean that the line is
purged of air, since any air would prevent the injector from opening due to
its compressibility?
