Maybe it's the thinner air, less wind resistance...The turbo compresses it so it's not really running on thin air.
Gotta VAG COM the '02 Golf. Daughter's been using it to go to work. It used to make just below 40mpg most all the time (automatic). She was making mid 30's (she likes to take off fast from the lights) but now it's making upper 20's maybe low 30's. Czech engine light is on. We found and fixed where mice had chewed into the EGR vac line and the brake booster line had split (intermitten brake boost loss). Thought fixing that leak might do the trick but mpg still sucks.

First tank was 44. something. Next was 38. I then took the car top carrier off
nd left the rear on and just filled up tonight and even with my leak and
ushing hard on the mountains-44.3 mpg. Anyone have theories as to why mountain
riving seems to get better MPG? My theory is you use a little more fuel to push
p the MT then you do on flat land but use basically no fuel going down hill.
eems all my vehicles are like this. Even though you have less O2 in the air
oing up to 11,000 feet in some places. Have to see what 75 on the interstate
he whole way home will be for MPG. Guessing the mid 30's depending on wind.

ongrats on the fix Travis.
mpressively creative cargo capacity there. You'll have to let us know what
ind of MPG you get with that setup.
