Forgot to mention-I measured the terminals on the VW alt and they are a 3/8 wide spade. Doing some searching there was only two places online that carried that size and I went with britshwiring.com as they had both the female 3/8 spade connector and the spade cover-sold separate of course but they at least had the cover. I didn't want things arching accross. I bought 3 to have one spare and it came to about $10 shipped. Ebay and amazon didn't even have them.

With the TDI starter. My starter has been doing that drag during the winters I think since I bought it in 2008 (04 model year). There are some threads on tdiclub on how to take apart-clean the old lube off-and re-lube things so it doesn't stick after starting for the split second making that terrible noise. As far as turning over-have you checked the battery and cables first? If your battery is getting weak or if there is bad grounds it could act the same way.
