We still have a rebuilder but he charges the same as box store, even if it just needs a bearing. There's one in the Seattle area that is fantastic. Luckily I have/had his number and he does big volume but still too time to call me about a Lucas alt on a Ford tractor. Had it sent back a second time, at no cost to me, to redo something that had two options of how it hooked up. Friendly, personal service and still does great work at reasonable prices. Just not all that local but at least not in Bangladesh.

just took an alt to a local guy from my fathers 430 L&G tractor-40 amp Alt. It
as around $60 for brushes/bearings. There is one other guy within a 20 mile run
hankfully. I didn't know anyone in Sheridan WY that did it though so I had my
rother send it to someone in MN to rebuild for around $85 about 4 years ago. I
now it is done right and it is supporting the local guy. And-the things I have
remain isn't an option most of the time. Advanced auto parts looked at me
unny when I asked if they could test the alt from the 430. They asked the car
ake year and model. They couldn't do a think without it-rebuilder could. I
idn't check with JD but since it is on a Yanmar diesel engine-JD is just the
iddle man and any yanmar parts are fairly spendy. The glow plugs through deere
re $35 each vs $5 for NKG. Even I have my limits on OEM (glow plugs for the
D).

Good point James, I have seen the same exact think in my town and surrounding
owns.
hey have to close shop because of markup on internal parts costs.
nd where are these mass rebuilding centers for the bigs guys, NOT in USA, China
or sure or 3rd world country.

There's the rub. You have to FIND a quality rebuilder. The way things have
een going, if my local experience is any indication, there will not be any
ocal rebuilders in a short while. Used to be that rebuilders were CHEAP
ompared to a factory reman unit, and less than half of new. Now, not so
uch... both local alternator and starter rebuilders have closed their doors
n the last year. I know one guy quite well over the years, and he cites
igh cost of parts, exceedingly high cost of freight on parts, and low
omparative cost of OEM reman units being offered. For instance, my combine
lternator I changed 2 years ago (2002 combine), the factory reman unit was
little over 50 bucks more than his parts cost, leaving him little margin
o compete. I suspect things are similar across the country and in other
ndustries.

I would agree, though with one caveat - you've got to find a quality
ebuilder first.
As far as charging in only one direction - I don't think that it should
atter at all, unless the brushes/slip rings are really worn and only want
o work in the same direction that they've been going all their life. I
an't think of another reason. Internal to the alternator it is alternating
urrent and shouldn't care one bit which way it is going or coming, since
very split second it is reversing anyway.
I know electricity some - I'm a power engineer - but not for car alternators
pecifically, so I guess I could be overlooking something, or be a bit
aive?

Where they VW alts or ones for other makes of cars?
I say go with rebuilt-as they don't fail as often as the exchanged ones.
hile you may be able to replace under warranty on the road-you won't need
o as often with a rebuilt one as often. I haven't had an alt failure yet. I
ave this spare one only because I went to the "W" terminal one for the tach
nd then upgraded to the AAZ motor which has a different setup so I had the
pare from the other motor-it was sold with the none "W" alt on it.

travis, yes, i had two seperate occasions where the alt charged only in
ne direction (in the on bench tester) and not the correct one so it created
confounding situation when i put the alt in the car.
as far as a replacement, i thought i should purchase one from a nation
ide resaler as i will at times be on the road traveling with this passat
agon and then could replace the alt when and where it goes bad.
