Well, I decided to go for it and got the seal kit for my '00 TDI. I watched the excellent series of videos on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VR44StvcXms), took copious notes, bought everything ahead of time, and spent the afternoon. Everything went well, and I just got back from washing the engine again. Hopefully, no more Diesel shows up. There are a couple of seals that you can't get to with the pump on the car. I'm hoping it's not one of them. I got the two on top, the quantity adjuster and its cover, as well as the big one between the pump head and the pump body. I "saved" $400, but had to spend almost $150, mostly on tools. I do feel a little better about doing the job myself. I dread taking my cars to someone else.
As far as I can tell, the only thing bad thing is the kind of thing that happens working here outside in December. I broke a strap on my flip flop.
