Wow, that is a cool story to be close to, I guess they saved the plane for history and it is Geneseo.
I was not doubting the story, it is one of the most famous WWII stories I bet.

I actually knew this guy (ham call WA2ATV), and knew that he was the
flight engineer. I knew him for about 25 years, he moved away about 13 years
ago. He told the story several times, and I was at Geneseo several times
when old crew members would show up and look at the plane, and they
talked about it as well. Therefore I believe the story to be true
and correct. Furthermore, I never knew Dick to stretch things or be
untruthful in any way.
Solving puzzles when a college student, there were several problems in
a creative problem solving workshop which required application of
bodily fluids, but Dick's example was most memorable for me.
