Yes it is normal for these cars to be cold when it is cold. My O5 Passat
TDI seems to get heat at about four miles of freeway driving, but it won't
be fully warm until I've been on the road for a 10 miles.

Get a frostheater, you and your car will be happy.

Hi all;

Here in WI it dipped down to 5 degrees (F) this AM. This is my first cold
weather with the new-to-me 04 TDI. Car sits outside at night.
I did a bunch of city-type driving initially this AM dropping kids at
schools, then I was on the highway for about 20 minutes before I got to
work. The car did not reach full operating temp during the 30 min of easy
driving (30-45 mph) - temp gauge needle made it about 1/4 of the gauge,
when it usually sits dead center once warm. It only reached full operating
temp (center of the gauge) once I got on the highway.
I believe the gauge to be accurate from feeling the heater output, which
got warmer as the needle rose.

Anyone else in cold climates -> Is this normal for these cars to have
trouble warming up, or should I think about changing out the thermostat?

TIA;

Chris

Does that model still have the coolant glow plugs? They may be burned out,
and they help the car heat up to normal temperatures.

That or the thermostat is stuck open

Sounds normal for those temps. Get close to zero and your heater can
suck off about as much heat as the engine can make short of highway
speeds.
I drove my Dasher around for about a week, below zero, no heat. Figured
the fairly new stat had stuck open. I lifted the hood to put a cardboard
in front
of the radiator and the whole rad was packed in snow! It'd never gotten
warm
enough to melt any. Finally hit the highway one day and had heat in a few
hundred yards.

Chris - my apologies if I'm stating the obvious, but if you like a warm car
you might consider a frostheater.

Thanks Tad - not worried about the heat; first car I ever had with heated
seats so I'm perfectly fine... just trying to figure out if the thermostat
might be bad, or if they really take this long to warm up.

I dont' have any experience in temps that low, but from what I've heard
that sounds pretty normal. My 01 takes quite a while to heat up even when
it's down in the 20s.

Even a normally functioning 'stat will bypass a certain amount of coolant
into the radiator though, so you could improve your warmup times by using a
radiator blanket - many people use a piece of cardboard like Loren
mentioned.

Also the upper/lower engine covers help a bit if they aren't in place.

The thermostat on my 04 TDI is stuck open.? the CEL is one because of it
with a code that indicates it is taking the car to long to come up to
operating temp when driving.
I still get heat in about 4-5 minutes even though my needle is on dead cold
still.
but, not 5 degrees by any means in my neck of the woods.
