[Vwdiesel] tdi heat

I have a 1998 Jetta tdi.  Up here in cold country (AK) I have found that if I set the temp controller to the cold side of the dial, knob just about horizontal, that the engine will come up to operating temp in about five miles.  But as I increase the amount of heat in the cab the engine temp will drop.  Since I am usually the only body in it I just dress warmly and go with a warm engine.  Besides this keeps me from going out in cold weather unprepared for a breakdown at -5F.
