TDI prices are unrealistically high since they have been the only affordable diesels available during the past 20 years. The only other choice is to look for a Mercedes diesel & out here in Calif., we were not allowed to buy new VW TDI diesels for many years. You could buy an out of state used one if it had over 7,500 miles & the years when they were sold in Calif. VW limited the number sold out here & I think, much of the rest of the USA. I don't expect these high prices for used TDIs will continue as GM is going to start selling a diesel Chevy Cruse in the 2013 model year. Unless blows is as they have in the past, or grossly over prices it like the Chevy Volt, they will sell everyone they can make. This will force Ford to offer a diesel option in the Focus & Fiesta. Then Chrysler-Fiat will jump on the bandwagon as both Ford & Fiat have plenty of diesel engines they can modify for the USA. This should then prompt the Asian manufacturers to provide us with a diesel option as they do in Europe & other markets. Also, VW wants to become the world's leading manufacture although I doubt they can dislodge GM & Toyota. I suspect once diesel availability ramps up since we will probably be paying over $5 a gallon for gas & diesel in a couple years, more Americans will demand fuel efficient cars & diesel is a cheaper way to go than hybrids. Gas is predicted to jump to $4.50 this summer which will probably jump to $5 for gas & $5.50 for diesel here in Calif.
