I think you got it on the head Bill - those screaming about high fuel
prices are really whistling in the wind - it's an inevitable upward
progression.
Much of the TDI price escalation is (as you said) a simple
supply-and-demand problem. Remember also that the manufacturers are
restricted in the number of diesels they sell (or at least, they were until
recently) by the way the EPA regulated average emissions. They could only
sell so many diesels before they tipped their fleet emissions(probably NOx)
average over the limit. I think with the new CR diesels, this may be less
of an issue than before.
Also remember that various manufacturers (Subaru and Honda for start) had
actually planned to release diesel models in the US until the recession put
a damper on that. These plans are probably still sitting on the shelf and
I imagine it's just a matter of time before they finally get rolled out.
