[Vwdiesel] exhaust systems

The only thing I ever did was the "silver dollar dinner" (what we called them in Boy Scouts) on the muffler but I remember at the time having visions of making an "oven" of sorts on the exhaust, and wrapping a crock pot crock with coolant lines for a slow cooker, but I suppose with coolant at 190 degrees, it would sure take a long time to get anything cooked.
But, really, the pork chops were quite tasty, and it was nice having something hot and ready when I arrived. No exhaust smell, since it was on top of the muffler, and wrapped in 3 layers of HD aluminum foil.

Ha ha, that might be true. It would be more of a slow cooker.
My girlfriend at the time gave me this book for Christmas:

Stop, that is silly talk. Our diesels don't get hot enough for proper cooking temps.
And the black sooty aftertaste, emm emm.

Dad's old Passat (which is leaving this afternoon!) had the exhaust replaced with a bit larger pipe a couple years before it was wrecked. Sounded almost exactly the same.
I think when i get the motor installed in the bus, I am just going to drive it to a muffler shop and
have a pipe bent straight down and back from the turbo. I might try to have them shape the bend such that I can set foil-wrapped food on it to cook a meal as I drive! That or I'll weld a little platform on top of the pipe. (I did that once on the way to a campout-wrapped pork chops, potatoes and carrots in 3 layers of heavy duty foil and wired it to the muffler. Turned out awesome, the chops were fork-tender and the potatoes were cooked.)

I just had a 2" exhaust fabricated from front to back. had them ream out the dump bucket bracket and weld to that, then bend 2" pipe to go all the way back.
cost me $100 more then I was figured and I could have gotten the techtonics 2" exhaust system for about the same money but would have had to install myself and tough with NO lift.
I did a timing belt swap and lots of pre winter maintainance just before having the exhaust replaced.
I have not felt a difference but when I went to start the car the day after doing the time belt change I looked at the advance cable and "son of a gun" it was 1/2
way out, so I know my timing is off, I set the timing without FIRST making sure the cable was pushed all the way in. ARG.
So, I am hoping after finding time to reset the timing this week that I will feel more value to the power of the engine after getting the new strait pipe installed.
the sound is great, no need for a muffler at all.

I was underwhelmed w the performance difference and wondered
about all the positive info I had read on "uncorking" the
exhaust on these little diesels.
Just recently I had occasion to put in a new timing belt and
water pump. After I had set the timing and went for a drive
the difference I felt was enormous. It was like a whole new
engine in there! I can only surmise that the timing was off
a bit, perhaps due to a stretched belt? Having never set the
timing before on this engine I can't really
say. But I am way
pleased w how the truck now performs and sounds. It was a bit
pricey but I'm now a big fan of techtonics exhaust systems.
One last note is that the 2" exhaust actually measures one
and 7/8" I.D.
Difference on a TD can be huge. On my 1.5 Rabbit, 2" back really opened
the top end and extended the torque curve but not much otherwise, maybe a
little mpg. 2 1/4 on the 1.6 pickup did nothing through most of the range
but
bottom end was unstallable! Didn't gain any mpg as I recall. Jake had a
2"
Techtonics on his 1.6 TD Rabbit and I finally convinced him it needed
2.5".
He welded up a 2.5" mandrel bent system and was hugely impressed with
the improvement. He'd been previously impressed with what the 2" system
did for him. His 2.5 went from the turbo rather than just
the
spring-clamp
donut as the 2" did.
When we put the TD in the pickup, it never got anything but 2.5 from the
turbo back so I couldn't compare.
