Dave:  the original struts seldom last beyond 30k miles, and usually 
John Q replaces them with shyte.  If you really want to enjoy the car 
as it was designed for the European market, you can install the VW 
Eurosport stuff by purchasing Eibach lowering springs (higher rate) and 
Bilstein SP (Sport for lower car) struts to match.  Add the 
appropriate front and rear anti-roll bars, and you have it just the way 
the VW GTIs are in Europe - and the way our Jetta is in Canada (this 
was actually dealer option up here, but I have slightly different 
hardware for VR6)

Mileage sounds about right for that speed for a stock engine.  -  Pat
