Ha ha, well I guess Bentley agrees. I didn't see a removal procedure for the turbo, but in the notes showing the diagram of the turbo and hoses, it says to remove the axle.
Out it comes!

Subject: [VW-TDI] 01 Jetta Turbo Removal
I'm working on pulling the turbo to clean it with some oven cleaner, hoping that will take care of the problem of limp mode, as just about everything else has been tried.
The turbo is loose, but trapped in the engine compartment!
It looked like a lot of people were pulling the intake manifold to get it out, but I was wondering about pulling the axle instead. It almost seems like that might be easier and less work.
The manifold does not need cleaning at this time; it was done not too long ago.
Thoughts? Anyone tried it pulling the turbo from below?
