Stupid axle took at least an hour longer than it should have to remove, I couldn't get the axle to pull out of the hub, so I had to take the brakes off to attach the puller I had. That was annoying.
I discovered that the actuator on the turbo is leaking.
Once I got the turbo out, I used a hillbilly method of checking it-sticking the hose in my mouth and applying vacuum that way! I watched and it sure looked like the actuator was releasing when it shouldn't be. So i went and bought a Mity Vac and used that. It took about 10 in. to start to actuate it, when it should only take 3-5 and then it would slowly release.
So problem likely solved. Well, likely found. Not solved until it is all put together. I guess if I had checked that first, I wouldn't have had to pull the turbo assembly, as it is possible to get the actuator off with it on the car. Which means the oil line wouldn't have been broken, and I wouldn't have had had to buy a collection of gaskets, either. But I didn't buy the MityVac until I saw the actuator slowly releasing.
There is probably a lesson somewhere in that last paragraph! Ha ha
I was still thinking of cleaning the vanes, but with the actuator off, the little lever sure seemed to move ok. It seems like there is some potential for getting parts lost or something, so since it moves so easily I don't think I'm going to take it apart. I'll put it together with a new actuator and instruct my friend to blast it every once in awhile to keep crap from building up.
My suspicion now is that there is just a tiny pinhole in the diaphragm, so many times the computer was able to overcome it with N75 duty cycle-at least in many cases except for heavy load-but due to heat, barometric pressure or some other variable it would have more or less of an ability to affect how the car ran.

# Ha ha, well I guess Bentley agrees. I didn't see a removal procedure for the turbo, but in the notes showing the diagram of the turbo and hoses, it says to remove the axle.

# I'm working on pulling the turbo to clean it with some oven cleaner, hoping that will take care of the problem of limp mode, as just about everything else has been tried.
#
# The turbo is loose, but trapped in the engine compartment!
#
# It looked like a lot of people were pulling the intake manifold to get it out, but I was wondering about pulling the axle instead. It almost seems like that might be easier and less work.
#
# The manifold does not need cleaning at this time; it was done not too long ago.
#
# Thoughts? Anyone tried it pulling the turbo from below?
