Like Loren says, you can use the hammer type impact tool, and if you don't 
ave any impact tools, you should get one of those.  Usually they come with
/8" hex bits for screws (slotted and phillips) and will drive 1/2" sockets.
n my poor starving student days, I wore out one of these, on the cam, mostly
orking on my wife's Volvo.  Got rid of the Volvo and got better tools.  The
eplacement still looks new.
  Mine's a Craftsman.  Dad bought it for me when I was 
about 11 and got my first project motorbike.  Lost it a couple 
years ago when I could no longer find my little tool box.  :-(  
It was also about like new and had disassembled many bikes and 
a few tight bolts and screws.  Bought a new one and they just aren't 
much more than the cheap ones.
