  There' IS a way.  It involves a small amount of circuitry and a potentiometer to calibrate.  I'll betcha 
Roger has a copy of the schematic and even a parts list!  :-)

I just bought a non running 1982 VW Jetta deluxe 4 dr diesel for 200 bucks.
t has a cracked head which I will replace. It is in decent shape for a 30
ear old car and has no rust.  It has in the floor consol  a 2 inch electric
ach. I think it might work with a connection to the W post on the
lternator. Does anyone know anything about such a thing? Is there anything
o it other than the gauge and the wiring to the W post? I plan to use it on
y Turbo diesel Fox if possible.
