[Vwdiesel] is it stock?

I just bought a non running 1982 VW Jetta deluxe 4 dr diesel for 200 bucks.
It has a cracked head which I will replace. It is in decent shape for a 30
year old car and has no rust.  It has in the floor consol  a 2 inch electric
tach. I think it might work with a connection to the W post on the
alternator. Does anyone know anything about such a thing? Is there anything
to it other than the gauge and the wiring to the W post? I plan to use it on
my Turbo diesel Fox if possible.
