The concept VW truck is a unibody style design like the Honda Ridgeline but the one that was actually produced has a separated box and cab. The single cab really looks like the American made versions of trucks. Look into the "chicken tax" if you want to see why they aren't bringing them over here. You can make them here and get around it but to import-the added fees would be so much that few would buy it or VW would loose money on the deal. I would love the caddy again but think about how it would (or should I say would not) pass on the crash testing. And then there is the whole chicken tax deal again. Reading into the reason on the chicken tax and the changes that happened after it was put in place basically is straight against VW-although it has affected even Ford. There transporter vans they bring them over as passanger vans and then take the rear windows, seats and seat belts out and through them away (can't be reused) basically tacks on another $1000 since it isn't made here. Some other companies have put seats in the bed of the pickup so it isn't a "truck" to get around it. Interesting history. Basically it was because some Euro companies taxed our chicken back in the 50's so we taxed some of those specific countries imports like wine, cigars, etc to hit them where it hurts.

As for the tach. I wouldn't think you would have to redo any circuits since it is coming out of a diesel and the pulley sizes are the same (so the rpm of the Alt is the same on both vehicles in relation to the crank). Otherwise yes there is some reworking to do. I have both mine ran off the "W" but I don't think they are greatly accurate. Close enough for goverment work though.
