The adjustor just left.  He said it didn't take too much entering things to have their system decide total the car.

He went over all the options (such as heated seats and such) and entered it all into a computer system.  I guess that USAA has their own in-house system to determine values (or maybe it is contracted out, not sure) but he said they don't really consider Blue Book or NADA but will search the area for comps for sale.  Dealers and internet.  He said if they don't find at least 8, they will ask him to widen the circle.  I told him to tell them in advance to do that, cause there aren't many in the area.  I've already started looking.  I will also keep looking but this actually makes me feel a little better about the possible offer.

In my looking for my own comps, I ran across a guy selling MKIV parts and there was a picture of a silver Golf Shell in the ad.  Unfortunately that was sent to the crusher already, but he told me about his friend who has an '02 GTI with a blown 1.8T motor.

As much as 4 doors make my life easier, a TDI GTI sounds like fun.  On the other hand, I would bet that a 1.8T that blew the motor at 104,000 miles (per the ad) probably simply suffered a broken timing belt.  The original stated change interval on those was 105,000 and many broke just before that, but just outside the 100,000 warranty period.  I had a head repaired on a Jetta in that boat, and put the car back together for a friend.  It wasn't too bad, so fixing that and selling it might be an option I would consider either way.

Unfortunately, he said it would take up to 48 hours, not including weekends, to get a quote from USAA on the settlement.

The guy said I could go ahead and pull the rear bumper to check out how the hitch fared.  I think I'll do that now while its nice out, and do my work notes later when it is dark and cold.

One kind of good thing about this is that they were going to pay for a rental car, but instead will be letting me cash that out, which should help pay for the new radio I was going to want to put in my 4Runner.

Hmm... a TDI 4Runner...
