Wow, that is pretty crazy that they thought to put the coding in the software to look for the clutch pedal being used a couple times before cruise is available!
I'm glad to have that information in the back of my mind, as there is every chance I would have thought to try bypassing the switch if I were in your position.
I love cruise control, I even once adapted the system off a wrecked Corrado I had into my '78 bus! Unfortunately it doesn't work anymore, though I haven't bothered to completely diagnose it past the switches and such, because I don't think all of that system will be used when I get to putting the TDI motor in there anyway.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Cruise on 04 TDI
Cruise stopped working a couple weeks ago on the TDI. Wife drives it daily-I get the vehicles that don't have it so I didn't think too much about it. I got my VCDS cable back from someone barrowing it and when to engine, then measuring block 006. If you move the switches on the stalk numbers should change. All switches did. Same for the brake and clutch. But only the brake did. So I took the switch off the clutch and took it apart and the contactor had broken. I tried to jimmy rig short term if needed-but you have to be in gear-break contact and then make contact inorder for the computer to turn the cruise on. An on/off switch with the OEM switch parts could work but ECS tuning had the switch and shipping for under $30 with 2 day shipping.
My rabbit fuel line blockage-it was both a bad thermo T and my double clamp on the banjo return bolt were restricting. Working great now.
In the process of taking the head off the Geo Metro to change headgasket. Oil return holes are likely too small by the amount of oil I am going through on the intake-very common with the gaskets. I just need to punch the holes to the same size as the block/head. Doing timing belt as well.
