I can't remember who now, but someone wanted to know about results from experiments I'd planned to put the transponder chip near the ignition but use a different key. I finally got to try it today. I have a non-smart key for it that normally will not start the car. I put that key in the ignition and held my transponder key up to the lock. It did indeed start and I could take the transponder chip away from the lock and everything kept running. I did, however, find that it was very finicky about where it was held. Apparently, there's a tiny range on the system. I don't know if putting a transponder chip in the ignition housing would do it. A few millimeters off and it's a no-start.
I found someone from Fred's who lives locally that has the ability to get in and pull the SKC. I expect I'm going to just go to him and pay to get the code and some keys coded. There are times, even as cheap as I am, that I eventually decide to just pay some money and get the problem fixed. I kept hearing scary things about the Chinese hack Tach-Pro software. If it doesn't cost hundreds of dollars, it's a hack. And, I don't have a running Windows computer anyways. (Linux)
