For what it's worth, I have a 2003 and bought 2 blank key fobs on eBay for
around $30, which included the electronic guts.  My wife had lost both of
the originals over the years and was using the valet key.  The dealer
recommended a local locksmith, and when he arrived he asked if we had AAA
road service... ...which we did.  He cut 2 new keys and updated the VAG
software for under $50, about 1/3 of the normal charge for non-AAA
members.  His only criticism of the eBay fobs was they are Chinese and use
a much harder metal in the key portion than the OEM from Germany, Brazil or
Mexico.

So far, a year later, the fobs are still working fine and the key portions
don't show any signs of wear.
