[Vwdiesel] Loss of power and rough running

On te way home from our first voyage , I started go hear my inline
diaphragm pump begin to hammer then get louder and power fell on its face.
Turned out there was a bunch of rust in the tank that clogged the pre
filter to the fuel pump. I replaced the filter an cleaned out the tank
voila, it was better. On our second trip I had to replace the seal between
the main body and pressure head of my pump due to leaking heavily. This
issue started on the way home from our 3rd trip, with the fuel pump on and
cracking the air bleed screw in the big fuel filter assembly showed I was
pushing plenty of fuel to Tue injection pump. Could pump timing being a
touch too advanced cause issues? I need to get the correct timing tool to
get a better measurement than the magnet base dial indicator that could
have taken measurement at a slight angle?
