[Vwdiesel] Vwdiesel Digest, Vol 118, Issue 9

My 85 golf diesel did the same thing a couple years ago. Ignition switch didn't help. After lots of searching I found it to be a bad connection on the red wire in the blue rectangular plug behind the fuse box. I didn't have any new pins for the plug and butt connected the wire together. No problems since then except a similar problem where I would lose all power. That turned out to be the body ground next to the battery.

It failed on me in a fast food drive through, in desperation I pulled the connector of the back of the switch and plugged it into my spare switch. I then used a screw drive to get the car going, after that I'd put the switch and screw driver in the glove box. The new starting procedure was unlock steering column plug switch in start car & drive off. I always kept a spare switch in the glove box after that.
