I'd say any doors from the same generation will work, but doubt even the next generation would work. They looked similar but the body was changed enough that it shouldn't work.
I just looked at pics of wagons vs sedans and at first I thought they looked different, but after looking more closely, I think the "difference" is an optical illusion. They look the same to me.
Diesel is right around 3.75/gallon here in Manhattan, as well as in Riley last night, the next town over from where we looked at the sprayer. (James, you should have purchased it and had me drive it up! That would have been a grand adventure.) The price hasn't changed much recently, and according to my Fuel Log app, the price has averaged 3.83 since I started keeping track in May with a low of 3.56 in June and 4.20 in October.
Speaking of grand adventures, I had a small one with one of my clients last night. We drove over to Tuttle Creek Reservoir to look for Bald Eagles (they migrate through the area this time of year, and there are at least three nests along the lake so some stay). We ended up driving down a hill toward the water on a snow-covered gravel road. There was one set of tire tracks since it snowed on 12/31. Didn't see any eagles, too bad. When we went to leave, the ole Golf didn't want to crawl up the snowy hill. No problem, I thought, I have snow chains.
Unfortunately, they didn't fit! So that was out. I backed down a little to a flat spot to try for some momentum but that didn't get me far.
So the next option was to just floor it to force the tires to dig down through the snow to the gravel. This worked to crawl up the initial hill (with the speedo reading 25ish...) to a flatish spot where I was able to gain momentum enough to make it up the next hill!
Whew!
Next time we meet, I'm driving the 4Runner again...

Our trip last April revealed higher than usual diesel prices as well. Cheapest was near David Cook in KS, when we went to look at a sprayer for James. Wonder what their prices are like now?
I'd strongly suspect that a 4 door and wagon are identical from the doors forward. All of them sure seem to be, just as a Jetta is a golf from the doors forward (at least used to be).

f other years may also work..i am currently traveling in the south eastern part
f the us and hoped to find some rust free parts while doing so. i hope all is
ell for everyone in the new year. i think our interest in these vw;s is going
o become more important as the next years march on , i am amazed at the high
rice of diesel around the country, areas where i usually see big savings over
he prices in chicago where i live
