  If I'm not mistaken, the 02A is the cable shift tranny and I know the 020 is the rod shifted one like itn the Rabbits, etc.  I'd guess the 02A starts about 93 (since the A2 body goes to '92) but not positive.  The 02A will have higher gear ratios available, than the 020.

i am trying/wanting to put a 1.9 non tdi turbo from a 91 jetta, into a 93 
assat, manual trans.  it has been suggested that i use a 02a trans from a tdi. 
 am hoping to confirm that information here and get a little more info like 
ears the 02a was produced.
t also has  been said that rear, pass engine mount would need to be changed to 
he mk3 tdi mount. 
t sits in the engine bay like it wants to move toward the driver side frame 
ail and it has been suggest that if i wantedto use the 020 trans, that i would 
eed to modify the driver side frame rail (cut and reweld)
