Once again, the list came through. Thanks to everyone for your responses and suggestions.
Since I did not put the car on jack stands front and rear, I decided to disconnect at the front end by prying off the clamps. Naturally I tried the "swing the exhaust to one side and remove by hand the clamp on the opposite side" legend. Yea, right. Was able to get the down pipe out of the clamping sleeve, slipped out the heat shield and am on track to complete the shift linkage. Also found that I need a couple of exhaust hangers. I must admit, for a 1991 car, the stuff underneath is very pristine.
Anyone know what the exhaust system I.D. for MK2s? ken

I think that was how I did mine. Had to raise the car though to get it to drop enough. Irritating thing was once I got it out, cleaned it all up and inspected it. I found nothing wrong, put it back, and it all worked fine! I remember there was something I would do differently another time but don't remember what it was now. :-P Of course the Reverse lockout is a separate thingy, doable from above.

Seems like when I replaced all the stuff on a MK11 Golf, I didn't even think of
nhooking the exhaust from the manifold. I undid it from the back of the car,
hich allowed it to drop and move to the side enough to get at all the parts.

I have been lucky enough to get all of the push-on retainers off of the studs
f my 91 jetta, but have yet to be able to "rotate it" off of the exhaust
ystem. I am trying to gain access to the shifter box for a rebuild, but have
ot found any info in the Bentley or online that specifies what the "rotate off"
he exhaust system means. I have tried several times and the shield always get
tuck. I do not know if I should bend the heat shield or not, or if I should
rop the exhaust down pipe and the muffler just to be able to remove the heat
hield and be able to remove the shift box. Any tips? Thanks.
