[Vwdiesel] starter motors

Did VW ever make a diesel starter for the early rabbits that was 
physically the same size as as a gasser rabbit starter? I removed my 
starter and took it to the local auto parts store for testing. When they 
tried to test it, they got an error message that it has to be tested on 
the car because the shaft does not have a bearing on the end. The shaft 
had a lot of end play, so I ordered a new one. The new starter is larger 
in diameter and at least an inch longer than the starter that was on the 
Caddy. Did I have a gasser starter on a diesel Caddy?
