Without doing the part number thing, hard to say.
As you now know, VW had a habbit of putting the starter shaft bushing
in the other side of the bellhousing, instead of putting a bunch of
structure on the end of the starter itself to hold the bushing and end
of the shaft. (Automatics did it the US way IIRC).
However, while there was one common bolt pattern for the 020 gearbox,
there may have been a dozen different vendors and models of starters
that all fit the same thing - and some were quite different. You
MIGHT have had a gasser or diesel starter before, and you PROBABLY have
a correct diesel starter now. Only way to know for sure is use the
part numbers of the starter manufacturers (NOT the VW number).
