  Hard to say for sure.  I think the 1.5 starters were different than the 1.6, physically, but not positive.  The gasser starters are fractional hp and the diesel ones are something like 2hp.  Then in '85 they put in the gear reduction, PM starters.

Did VW ever make a diesel starter for the early rabbits that was 
hysically the same size as as a gasser rabbit starter? I removed my 
tarter and took it to the local auto parts store for testing. When they 
ried to test it, they got an error message that it has to be tested on 
he car because the shaft does not have a bearing on the end. The shaft 
ad a lot of end play, so I ordered a new one. The new starter is larger 
n diameter and at least an inch longer than the starter that was on the 
addy. Did I have a gasser starter on a diesel Caddy?
