Hi Rolf
Yeah, what he said, but if the PO was using belt dressing on the T belt,
change that soonest, and you can spin the tensioner and roller to see if
there is a problem there. That is definitely NOT a belt dressing belt. Any
belt cover touching the belt does make a hell of a noise, but you will see
wear on the inside if there is a problem in that regard.
On the brakes, definitely the cable with those miles on it. 99 jetta I had
ate brake cables for lunch if you drove on gravel- the cable jacket wears,
lets in moisture, and the cable rusts and swells so it moves poorly. when
you're there, have a good look at the rear suspension bushings too. Tip
would be to either use them ALL the time, or not at all. I use them always,
and seem to have less trouble, but the jetta was the worst of the fleet for
e brake cables.

Had a similar issue with my Rabbit. It's an air leak under the hood
somewhere. The recirc fitting on the filter is the most common (in my
experience) place to fail and I had no luck fixing it, short of replacing
the "thingy" and o-ring. Only difference is that the ones I dealt with,
wouldn't run at all. Could be a crack or loose fitting anywhere in the
supply or return lines. Look for air bubbles.
Brakes sound like you suppose, bad cables. If the pads are worn nearly to
metal then possibly replacing them would fix it. Rebuilding the caliper
would be even better in case of rust buildup around the piston.
I'd listen for the noise before I go to the trouble of replacing the
T-belt. Just don't listen too long before making a diagnosis. :-)

hey all
ust bought a 2001 Jetta w 138k, has some issues, would love some guesses
before
tackle:
1. fuel supply
O parks it facing nose-down b/c he says when parked flat or uphill it won't
tart (or starts hard) e says air in the fuel line somewhere 'm thinking fuel
tank something? but looks like he already replaced the fuel ender (there's
an extra (used) one in the parts bag that came with the car) 2. rear brakes
eized up whenever you set the parking brake, goes away after you drive it
for a hile ssuming e-brake cables, more likely than calipers?
ar bought in Falmouth, MA - sea air for at least last several years 3.
timing belt noise haven't heard it myself, but PO says sounds like a roller
or tensioner is oing ealer did the TB 25k ago, and they serviced it recently
when he brought it in ith the noise - their report says upper TB cover
hitting one of the pulleys 'by ibration', repositioned correctly, noise gone
- according to PO this is bull, till an issue - he says noise disappears for
a while when he sprays belt ressing on it y instinct is to just go ahead and
re-do entire TB I have only driven the car a couple miles to test - slight
boost leak I think I eard, but otherwise feels solid and peppy - I have not
owned long enough to onfirm any of this behavior, other than seized brakes
(AAA guy set it before I ould stop him) and very slight hard start after
sitting slight uphill overnight about 1 sec crank instead of chick-vroom
like my Golf) thoughts on any of this?
hanks very much,
Rolf in MA
