You will need to change the engine backing plate (behind flywheel) as it is different than the 1.6. I know the serpentine belt set up won't fit in a Mk1 but I don't have any idea about the Vanagon. There may be two extra wires going to the injection pump. One is to the cold start valve on the front of the pump, it can be wired to a momentary switch or simply ignored, the other is usually attached to a switch on top of the pump attached to the accel arm. I used this as a cut off for the compressor under acceleration. Although several have mentioned putting a TDI crank sprocket, or changing out the whole crank to prevent a failure of the crank sprocket, this was a problem on only the earliest years of the AAZ and was straightened out later so if you have a relatively recent version of the motor, you are probably OK. I have done an AAZ install in a MK2 Jetta and the ONLY big disappointment was the fuel economy. It was simply not a good match for the transmission in the Jetta so it revved too high at highway speeds. Are you sticking with the 4 speed in the Vanagon or have you sourced a 5speed? BTW you MIGHT have some clearance problems with the engine carrier on the turbo side of the engine as the carriers are different between the turbo engine and the NA engine. There is a guy who sells the carriers on the Samba if you want to make sure you have the correct clearance, otherwise you may need to "clock" the turbo housing to get clearance. Hayden
