[Vwdiesel] I have an odd question...

Sorry it's off-topic of diesels, but have any of you who have owned *both* a
MK1 Rabbit and a 70's vintage Super Beetle (McPherson strut front
suspension) ever parked the two of them side-by-side, popped the hoods and
compared the geometry of the strut towers between the two of them?  Or for
that matter, are the front struts for the '73 or later Super Beetle the
*same* struts as the Rabbit/Golf of the same year?  Or maybe the Polo?

I've always wondered why there was a grill under the front bumper of the
Super Beetle, since there was no need for a grill there.  Makes me wonder if
it was a test-bed for the development of the Rabbit/Golf.
