[Vwdiesel] MK2 Alternator bracket on MK1 engine was looking for alternator

I don’t use the MK1 bracket on my alternator. I have manufactured an adjustable set up like what is on the gas models. I removed the teeth from the adjuster on the gas setup and welded them to the long arm from the Mk1 that attaches to the top passenger side of the engine and goes across the top of the engine. This way the alt is supported by the holes in the pump bracket and adjusted using the arm. Stays tight and doesn’t require pulling up on the alt with some type of tool and then trying to tighten bolts that are inside of a bracket. Ken Tolbert has done this too and probably has a picture that could be easily uploaded somewhere. I intend to try James suggestion of running a direct line from the alt to the battery first before I mess with changing the alt. When you relocate the battery you realize just how many connections there are that pull power either directly from the battery OR from the positive contact on the starter. These include but are not limited to the glow plugs, the fan connections and a couple of hot lines into the car fuse box. So I am thinking that all those connections, which are now on the starter post, may be preventing good charge to the battery. Hayden

I was looking for a replacement for the stamped alternator bracket for my 1500, and the MK2 mount requires a lot of cutting. I found a MK1 cast alternator mount which required some cutting but not as much and used that. If you have the engine out for major work you could put a MK2 front plate and timing belt shroud on the engine & use the MK2 alternator Bracket.
