I took my longest handled pry bar and hat the end with a mallet (they are the Mac pry bars with the metal through the handle to the end to be hammered on). Done right it will twist the plug so you can either slip the bar behind it and pry it out or have a visegrips and pull on it out. Hardest part is if it is all the way in-getting it back out. All can be done under then car just fine. BUT-I stopped using the block heaters since I hardly noticed the heat from them at all (actually-I didn't notice it at all on either rabbit. So-I contacted Terry at Frost heaters that people put on their TDI's. I was the first Rabbit he put them on. I then bought an adapter hose for my 1.9 AAZ TD engine. Those put the heat OUT. I loved it since I would open the heater core valve and the defrost on for the windows. It would defrost part of the window it put so much heat out. Car was as warm as it was running. I wouldn't waste my time on a block heater if I had the frost heater as an option (or similar) since it is a world of a difference. Now that I live in salt country I don't really need the heaters anymore. The heaters on on my brothers 05 Jetta, parents 09 Jetta sportwagon, 13 Passat, My 04 Golf, and both 81 rabbits.
