When i bought my 81 pickup many years ago the owner had a pile of gp relays in the glove box. And the plugs were burned out. Replaced the plugs Then I just added a ford type solenoid relay to the 50 amp fuse and a pushbutton on the dash. No more troubles. When engine cold push button and count to 10 before starting....

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Glow plug indicator

Hello all, my 81 pu truck has a glow plug problem. Recently the glow plug indicator light on the instrument cluster would start to flicker while driving. The relay would "chatter" while the light was flickering. After two days of this, the glow plugs stopped working. I thought it was probably just a bad relay. I got a new relay plugged it in and the glow plugs started working again. I started the truck and took it out on a test drive. The indicator started flickering again with the new relay. Anyone have an idea about what may be causing this?
Thanks, Craig.

Could be a flkey relay socket or temperature sender:

Some relays don't tolerate things like that, although the Bosch relays seem to "do the
right thing" given bad temp. sender input.

Mine did similar once and it was related to the horn. Mine was the horn relay flickering yet it would make the GP light flicker with it. Unplugged the horn relay. :-) Years later I hooked it all back up and it's never done it again. Not sure just what was going on there. Loose wire most likely.
At lest your plugs still work. Could've stuck on and burned them all up!

Mine blinks and flickers and then goes solid, I have yet to trouble shoot
it, but was under the impression it was the indicator for the water
separator being full, I drained it and it is still doing it every now and
then. My jetta starts just fine, so I'm thinking it is the water separator
sensor is bad. Maybe yours is the same thing?
