[Vwdiesel] front end wobble, strut mount

hello all, my mechanic has suggested it is due to a strut mount.we have ruled out tire out of balance and ball joint wear.when raised off the ground, grabbing the wheel at 9 and 3 and working backand forth i do see some out of round movement at the strut top
should i presume that it is the mount or bushing inside the mount
the car is a 90 passat, shocks were/are seemingly ok-no bounce, bottoming or oil leakbefore i pull the strut out i thought i would ask here, i can drive the car though i do get awobble at 57 to 60 and when i lightly brake. i do have a 91 jetta strut assembly which from my search is the same part, only the mount is different.is there any benefit to swapping in this strut or am i just making more work for my self.the new mount is available locally and by autohauz.
