[Vwdiesel] Too cold

It was pretty cold a couple years ago and we thought the stats were bad in the Passats. Did some checking and testing and if you turned the heater off, it got to temp. Block the radiator and it did nothing, as it should be. If the stat's working correctly, NO hot water should go to the radiator until you reach operating temp, unless you have a bleed hole in the stat. Between the intake air and the heater, it was using up all the "extra" heat the engine could produce unless you dropped a gear, hit a hill or something. Otherwise turn off or way down, the heater if you wanted 190F! :P
Below -30F the old 1.5 ran with virtually NO coolant and didn't overheat, on the highway. Heater didn't work very well tho!

Shoot, the new ones are no different.
013 Passat is in the shop, we have a loaner 4 door golf, I think also a
013, it's the friggin arctic in the car. I drove it to Karate class the
ther night, it wasn't warming up after 2 miles at -28c, so I walked on it.
miles at 180kph, it finally hits 90 on the gauge, and you can actually
eel heat inside. Back it down to something more resembling dad driving his
aughters around, and it immediately drops the coolant temp to half of what
t was. The New Passat is only slightly better, but it is in the hospital
or heater work (go figure). The 2012 Passat was quite good, and you could
eave it in 5th on the highway to warm up quicker. the 13 is auto, but a
etter car.
y 97 golf is an oven. It has the 1.9td, the warmest car I own, so it
tands to reason it's in storage. The 05 Passat was good with 2/3 of the
ad covered. 97 Passat was cold too unless you had most of the rad covered.
ll the diesel vw's for the most part are too cool, you need either a storm
ront, or something to keep the wind out of the engine compartment,
articularly the lower opening below bumper. The motor is a very efficient
adiator, being in the transverse orientation, all the wind hits it, and
our heater core goes without. If there were no heated electric seats, my
ife would tell me to stuff these vw's somewhere.
