as a unit, and split them on the work table.

I once went through the agony of removing the tranny from an A2, and 
chickened out and pulled the engine too, after wasting a couple of hours 
trying to get the tranny back in.

I never want to attempt a clutch job in the car.

After lifting and replacing the power train assembled, a few times in 
different A2s, I could get it out in less that  2 hours, and back in and 
drive off in 3.
