FWIW I have found that I can hook a cherry picker to the engine (A2), remove the front mount so the engine can be dropped down a few inches, and pull the tranny pretty easily without having to disconnect/remove the whole engine. Best of luck.

I know nothing about any of the cars since the A3s, but I always found
on the A2s, it was easier to remove the engine and tranny from the car
as a unit, and split them on the work table.
I once went through the agony of removing the tranny from an A2, and
chickened out and pulled the engine too, after wasting a couple of hours
trying to get the tranny back in.
I never want to attempt a clutch job in the car.
After lifting and replacing the power train assembled, a few times in
different A2s, I could get it out in less that 2 hours, and back in and
drive off in 3.

i feel the same as sandy, pull engine and trans a unit rather than just the trans. once out it allows us to clean up any messy gasket leaks, maybe do the timing belt or change the oil pan gasket along with the rear main seal.
i have wondered if it was advantageous to unbolt the eng/trans mounts, raise the unit enough to separate the engine from the trans (support trans in lifted position) and then pull the engine out for work mentioned.
has anyone tried this approach. i am planning to swap in a turbo engine where a na now sits and wondered
