Removing the whole engine/tranny on an A4 won't be as easy as you now have WAY more electronics (sensor wires), vacuum lines to run more things, turbo/intercooler piping, AC (some older did have it-all newer have it). Then there is the issue of the torque to yield bolts. Some may think it OK to re-use but I can assure that I have hear enough stories on just the motor mount torque to yield bolts breaking after a timing belt that didn't replace those alone. Then there is the hardship of getting the added hoses off the engine since there is more with the coolant/fuel hoses then before too depending on what is left on the car vs taken off. Not to discourage but you would need to pre-plan a few more parts if this is your only car and you are removing it all. That said-removing the axles would save some headache but you would need to have new axle nuts and follow the torquing for those. If I were to remove the engine-I would removing the front completely first as isn't too bad removing. No motor mount on the front A4's either-only rear and both sides.
