i had this happen once to a pump i thought was good on the shelf and installed in my new rabbits engine. i did prime things to check oil gages before first run. when i went to drive it a couple days later just a bit into my drive it siezed and with it came screeching and smoking of the timing belt! scary as heck i have never had one of these pumps fail like that and not sure what i have done wrong, i have these pumps on the few cars i have that are daily driven.

Mine looks about like this one now: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.defianceohio.terrorware.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Falbum64%2FDSCN8828.sized.jpg&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vwdieselparts.com%2Fforum%2Fviewtopic.php%3Ff%3D8%26t%3D10991&h=480&w=640&tbnid=FSq_Ln4kAQfUJM%3A&zoom=1&docid=lJDP5BLZPoF2LM&ei=09puVOj3BdGqyASZxYGQCQ&tbm=isch&ved=0CCAQMygCMAI&iact=rc&uact=3&dur=791&page=1&start=0&ndsp=12
I either need a replacement (hopefully somebody has an extra spare) or I get some phenolic sheet and some JB Weld and start rebuilding mine.
Worth an ask! :-)

Can't believe that yours is as bad s that! Braking would have suffered eonsago.. If the vanes are still there ,but leading edges chipped away, simply rotating the
vanes will work.

That one took less than 10 minutes from installing it, iirc. Same with mine. I had no boost for the first couple minutes in cold weather so figured I'd clean up the lid and file down the housing a little to eliminate some of the .020 gap between the rotor and lid. For some reason it didn't lube up and galled. It worked stupendously for the first few minutes, GOBS of vacuum. I couldn't press the pedal enough times to end up with a hard pedal! I cleaned it up enough that the vanes would move again and had boost for one or two tries. Haven't looked again but I'm sure it looks like that one or worse. :-(

MAKE SURE IT IS FULLY AND PROPERLY MATED WITH THE OIL PUMP SO IT IS NOT
PRESSING THE ROTOR UP.
lEAVE THE TOP COVER OFF UNTIL YOU INSTALL THE PUMP AND ENSURE THE ROTOR IS
"FLOATING" INSIDE THE BARREL.
THE DRIVE TAB IS OFFSET AND YOU HAVE A 50% CHANCE OF GETTING IT WRONG.
