Matt, my Golf has the same issue, the micro switch does not tell the computer alarm system or the door light it has been opened.I found a great u-tube on fixing this from a guy in England. Not that hard, he said most of the time, 90%, they are fixable and only full of road dust and dirt. Clean them out and good as new, but it does require taking about the electronic door lock mechanism that is about $200 to replace.
I just need to put aside the time to do the job, but have been living with the issue for a few years.

Rolf, there are a ton of DIY's on vwvortex.com and tdiclub.com on getting
the door apart. The door lock module comes out as a unit attached to the
inner door panel (the one that the window regulator screws to). The door
is tedious to disassemble, but not terribly difficult.
The glass can stay in the car. You usually use duct tape to keep it up.
Yes, the window regulator comes out. Yes, you remove the DLM. As for
diagnosing why it won't close... I haven't the faintest. Mine has a failed
switch that makes it think the door is closed at all times. I've also
replaced both window regulators up front, so I've had the doors apart.
