good one to check as well, check them all.take them out one by one.I use a set of jumper cables and short it to a good spare battery. It will glow nice and orange quickly or it is no good. Another thing perhaps could you be down one glow plug? If the weather isn't too cold the engine will start but one hole might not be firing well till it warms up.

sounds like an issue with the cold start lever.I would disconnect the cold start cable by losing the holding 8MM bolt between the head and the side of the pump.
1. Have him manually push the cold start lever toward the back of the pump, the head with injection lines end. This will put the pump in full advance timing running mode. Then start cold to see if it starts and runs any better.2. If it runs better, then most likely his cable was not set right. To set the cable right.3. Push the cold start lever toward front of pump, normal running mode.4. Thread the timing advance cable into the connection hole making sure it is pushed IN all the way on dash.5. tighten it down and manually pull the cable at the dash and watch that the advance arm travels all the way toward the back of the pump to advance the timing.
Could be something this simple.

I have a request from a neighbor who has a 1981 1.6L NA diesel caddy. He has a pump that was rebuilt for him about 40k to 50k miles ago. He said his pump has always started, but the idle was rough and low and , he has to give it more pedal to keep it running until it warms up; then the pump and engine runs and responds fine. After the initial cold start, the engine starts, idles and responds fine. I told him I know nothing about pumps; but perhaps the cold start was not adjusted correctly. What else could cause the cold start problem? Thanks.
