Yes, it "cranks"  (i.e. the starter works) fine.

Yes, the engine does not engage (that's why I mean by "turn over")

It dies immediately unless I rev it very high right after starting.
Then it grumbles without end, ever after fully warmed (i.e. 20 minutes
of highway driving).

I think the spark is o.k., since it runs fine during the week.

Me too, but Audi won't replace it under warrenty unless it's reproducable 
in the shop (just like I don't fix software bugs unless it's reproducable
in my office!!!)
If it happens again, I'll just go in and instist that they replace it.
